Well, I am back home after an amazing journey around the globe! First I began a three and a half week tour of Europe with my good friends Amy and Kari of Unmata. First stop was in Dillenburg, Germany with the lovely Gabrielle. Next was Milan, Italy with Les Soeurs Tribal, those ladies know how to have some fun! Next stop for us was in Biarritz, France for the first Tribal Umrah, an amazing event organized by Djeynee. I had such a blast at Tribal Umrah with my roomies and all of the other teachers and dancers. From there I left Paris to fly to Beijing by myself to meet up with Adore from BDSS, as well as Maoudi of Paris and Leyla Jouvana & Roland from Duisburg, Germany. We did a weeklong of workshops and it ended with a huge and wonderful show.

I will post photos soon.... but for now Sabrina Milan was nice enough to let me post the video of my performance from Tribal Umrah... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wpl-dhxp7I

Now I am resting and happy to be at home and preparing for the SF Mecca Immersion Show! I am so excited to be part of this event and I am very excited to take workshops... it all begins with a workshop with Jamilla Salimpour on Thursday evening!!!!! http://www.sfmeccaimmersion.com/

The following weekend will be the Unmata Human Rodeo!!!! Amy is so creative, I can't wait to see what they have all been working so hard on for this event. http://unmata.com/rodeo/

Next is a workshop weekend in Honolulu with Shakti Dance Movement August 15th & 16th! http://www.shakti808.com/

The following weekend I will be leaving for Taiwan for a week of workshops, followed by a weeklong tour with BDSS! http://www.bellydancesuperstars.com/calendar/

The Rodeo Vision

I grew up on a cattle ranch, Angus to be specific. 40acres, 3 ponds, herd of cattle, 2 dogs, 4 cats, rounds of rattlesnake, 1 pig, 4 motorcycles, 1 boat, 3 pickup trucks and 4 horses.

Biscuit. The 15 hand tall brown Quarter Horse. I was 7 years old when my Dad convinced my mother to purchase a mother-daughter Horse combo that were for sale close to the ranch. Flying Star Ranch…my memories are coming back, I forgot that part. My mother worked full time and my Dad was a pilot so he was away on planes for most of my life. Minus a few years when he was laid off and played janitor at my school (my favorite years.) So Biscuit, the daughter of the team at 6 months old, and I had 40 acres and absolutely no chaperone from 7 to 16 years old when I left home. Let the ruckus begin…

She bit me, kicked me, ran me thru fences, into trees, stepped on me and tried to drown me in the pond on a daily basis. After years of abuse she was my best friend and I don’t blame her, we grew up together. These memories are some of the most fulfilling golden nuggets still left bouncing around in my mind. One more story before I get to business.

Biscuit was dark brown and pretty much invisible at night except for the white diamond on her forehead…I almost typed foreheart…awwwww. So school was about a 45 minute drive from the ranch, in “town”, and it got dark early in the winter. By the time I got home from school and then basketball practice, it was late and dark most everyday. I would park my truck at the house and then take my motorcycle down the hill to feed the animals. Here’s where Biscuit comes in. I parked the motorcycle around the corner of the barn and would walk to the hay barn. As soon a I opened the hay door, I would hear it. Biscuit, who I hardly thought was starving after grazing 40 acres on her own free will, would run to the barn. I mean run. I would hear the hooves, but I couldn’t see her. Remember? Dark brown, dark dark brown. She would get closer and closer and the sound of her pounding hooves and heaving breath was incredibly intimidating. She was huge! And I would stand by the door cowering. Just waiting for her to plow right thru me. But she never did. She would stop just in front me, just in front of me. Nostrils flared, ears back and eyes wide open. Wild and completely in control.

This my friends was the inspiration.

The Rodeo Summary

Spend the day on the Ranch! This is a one-time only epic event hosted by UNMATA and Brad Dosland of Taboo Media. Powered by Hot Pot Studios and supported by countless guest artists and die hard fans.

The venue! The Rodeo will be located at Long Branch Ranch, a ghost town recreation complete with small town, mercantile, saloon and a ton more I cant remember. It’s amazing. I mean really. For serious people… it’s perfect.
Bring some extra cash for horseback riding too. At 420pm the stables will open. You will have the opportunity to walk thru and watch the handlers prepare the human horses for the Rodeo. The stables will be open from 420 to 5pm, At 6pm meet at the coral for the Rodeo showcase. The Rodeo showcase will run for one hour from 6-7pm. This showcase includes dance performances by UNMATA, Verbatim, Street Team, Hot Pot Studio and Suhaila Salimpour. Dinner starts at 730pm with outdoor dining and entertainment. 9pm the Saloon opens! All night drinking, gambling and general mayhem! Then back to the Saloon to finish out the evening with surprise entertainment and more drinking and gambling! The evening runs until 2am and then we gotta go! Um……..

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING.....

I was happily surprised by 3rd Coast. From the variety of teachers to vendors it is a well crafted event. The attention to not overlapping dance styles presented made for a well rounded educational experience as well as two nights of shows you just don't want to end. If you truly love this art form and its infinite possibilities 3rd Coast should be included on your workshops-worth-attending list.
With Many Happy Ululations,

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As an older beginning dancer I was intimidated at first by the range of classes and the caliber of the dancers. But once I got there I realized there's so much more to dance than memorizing choreography. Most thrilling of all was to find out there were lots of other people just like me!
The Third Coast Tribal Event gave me a confidence as a woman and a dancer that I never experienced before.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3rd Coast has everything - fun but informative workshops covering lots of different styles, amazing shows with incredible variety, great attendees and wonderful organizers. I'd sell my husband to attend if I had to.

The Bellydance Body: Full weekend Intensive!
Biomechanics, Therapeutics, & Embodiment for Dancers—from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives.
With Aubre Hill & Deb Rubin.

**9 full hours of study!**
NEW to LA!

Drawing from the wisdom body traditions of Pilates, & Yoga, as well as extensive professional and personal experiences in the fields of Holistic Health, Dancer Rehabilitation, and Bellydance, Deb & Aubre combine forces to bring you this jam-packed weekend including:

- Experiential anatomy
~ Discussion, practice,hands-on learning
- Team teaching with Aubre & Deb, therefore dual perspectives on material.
~Skills, practices, and embodied awareness to take your dancing to the next level
~Injury prevention and rehabilitation of common bellydance injuries.
~one-on-one attention.
~All material directly applied to bellydance

This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips--, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance. And a necessary addition for Teachers in their tool kit of how to break down and explain safe, proper technique and give one-on-one student feedback and attention to detail.

Come develop a more connected conversation with your own body. Increase body awareness, core stabilization, and presence in movement, taking your dance to the next level, from amateur to artist.
All material will be directly applied to bellydance movement.

Pls. bring a yoga mat, a journal for note taking, and water bottle.
We invite you to also bring your specific questions, ailments, or injury concerns to be addressed.

Sat. June 5 1:00-6:00pm
Sun. June6, 11:00-3:00pm.
at The Center of Worldance, 230 West Main St., Alhambra, CA 91801

Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-up (aubre)
2-4: The spine! The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (team teaching, Aubre & Deb.)
4-6pm: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (Back, hips, pelvis, sacrun, & Legs) (Aubre)

Sunday:
1-2: Core Integrated Yoga for Bellydancers Warm up (Deb)
2-4: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (deb)
Free up the Neck/head, Shoulders, Spine, & Sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to –well--everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
4-5: Bellyrolls and Abs--The wisdom bodies’ secrets.

This is a short documentary I filmed while I was training in California in 2008.
It was a part of a visual anthropology project (I study ethnology and cultural anthropology in Slovenia), but I'm more of a dancer than I am a producer/cameraman/editor - so don't expect a professional film :)

I didn't want to define Tribal Style so I deliberately made a very "open" question - It was really interesting to see all what came out -
ATS, improvisation, community, theater, modern dance, pop, free form, ...

The question I asked the dancers was: "How do you think your style differs from other styles of bellydance. What is it like? How would you describe it to a general audience?"

Thanks to all the dancers who shared their thoughts:
Carolena Nericcio – FatChanceBellyDance
Kajira Djoumahna – Blacksheep Bellydance
Paulette Rees-Denis – Gypsy Caravan
Jill Parker – Ultra Gypsy
Ariellah Afalo – Deshret Dance Company
Heather Stants – Urban Tribal Dance Company
Elizabeth Strong – Bellydance Superstars
Kami Liddle – Bellydance Superstars
Amy Sigil – Unmata
Rachel Brice – The Indigo

Filmed and edited by Manca Pavli

Thanks to all of the dancers for their thoughts, time and inspiration!!!

- Hope you enjoy it -

We will begin and end with a gentle yoga flow and stretch to help lengthen, strech and strengthen the muscles needed for strong upper body isolations. A yoga mat is helpful, but not required.

1:00-4:00
Workshop 2: Tribal Fusion Choreography: Learn an original choreography by Kami, complete with slinky isolations, shimmies, turns, layers, locks, ticks, breaks and more.. a la fusion style! This class is open to all, but some belly dance experience will be helpful. Water and a dance journal are essential.

I saw you on tour with BDSS in UK twice last month, and you were all fabulous!
However, since seeing you, the songs for tribal have been annoying me - because I recognise them and I know I have them somewhere on my hard drive (But I have so many songs to search through that I can't find them on there!) if you could enlighten me and put me out of my misery i'd be very grateful!
The songs are your solo and the tribal girls dance which I think was after you did your short solo to Emalkay. It was very electronica/dubstep-esque anyway!

Looking forward to seeing you again at Tribalondon!

Any chance you could give us a behind-the-scenes peek at your life? I know you are busy, so if you don't reply I understand.
But, damn. She claimed she had to leave to go home to go back to work and missed the river trip. Uh uh. I'm not buying it. *smiles* If Tony in our band can overcome his fear of water and wait 3 days to have his heart attack (he's fine), then Miss Kami can brave no shower for 2 days, some sand in her bedding and grinds in her coffee.

Hi there...

So I'm back and adjusted from the jet lag... Taiwan is such a cute and lovely little country! We had shows in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung with some shows with over 1,000 people. Unfortunately we had a pretty packed schedule so I wasn't able to go on adventures like last year, which may have been a good thing (an attempt to visit Monkey Mountain left us lost out in the jungle with no way to get back to the city... and no cell phone reception!). I had a workshop in Hsin Chiu, sponsored by the lovely Kiki Kuan (the most adorable and sweet lady!) and looks like I'll be going back to Taiwan again next spring.

So I'm working on getting back on the 'work' side of things... answering emails and sending out workshop descriptions, so if you've been waiting on me, I'm sorry! I have a hell of a time doing the email thing while on tour.
Next, we follow up the show with an amazing workshop Saturday, August 23. This workshop combines all that we love about Kami!

Location:
Dance Place San Diego
2650 Truxtun Road
San Diego, CA 92106

http://kamiliddle.eventbrite.com
Door: $45

Seamless Dancing: Noon – 2:00pm
This class will begin with a brief warm-up and move on to drilling movements, but with a twist! A series of combinations will be introduced, focusing on creating smooth and continuous lines with the body, with a few pops and locks thrown in for fun. These combinations will be put together for a short choreography. Belly dance experience is highly recommended.

About Kami:
Kami’s style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop, jazz, and bhangra dance. Her goal is to always be a student of dance and to constantly expand her repertoire. Kami has performed and taught internationally and is currently touring with Bellydance Superstars.
On Sunday my car was broken into at Pride. I lost everything. My ipod, camera, new rollybag, my notebook, calendar, clothes, jewelry and...
my UNMATA necklace.
Everything else I can replace over time. But my UNMATA Necklace!!!!!!!
It was taken in San Francisco.
Here's what I'm thinking...This is a powerful piece of jewelry and it may show itself so I can find it. I figure I have a few hundred people on my side in the city that know the necklace or the symbol.
Please keep your eyes open and if you see one, it's mine. Offer to buy the necklace from whoever for whatever it costs and I will reimburse.
Please, I know she is trying to show up somewhere for me.

I'd like to offer private belly dance classes for anyone who feels like they need more one-on-one instruction, privacy, patience and a teacher dedicated to spreading the joy of the dance! You'll get to work at your own pace, wear whatever you like, and be encouraged to find the beauty of the dance in your own way.

I absolutely believe in the spirituality of belly dancing, and see it the way it was meant to be seen- a beautiful act that praises life and strengthens women's bodies.

The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

Wear comfortable yoga clothes or dress up for each lesson- it’s up to you!

The schedule is absolutely flexible, and I will do my best to work out a time that works best for you- lessons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours- again, it's up to you! The price will vary as to how long you want your lesson to be. To give you an idea, an hour-long lesson will be $15. However, trades can be made and I can always knock down the price if you need it. My goal is to inspire you and help you find belly dance as wonderful as I do.

Learn to relax into the art and the beauty of the dance and enjoy yourself!

is there a video out there with an example of Kami dancing this combo? or does anyone have some good notes?

i have:

'reach back and down with R hand as R knee bends for level drop. bring R hand up and over to L diagonal. contract pelvis, R hand comes down to frame the L side of the face and L hand reaches out toward audience.

repeat just the arms on the other side.'

can you do all that while remaining in 'awkward lunge,' or am i missing something? :-P thanks!

Weaving it Together: Technique-Focused Dance Combinations.

In this class we will not only work on honing our dance technique, we will put it to good use as we put those moves we have drilled ever so faithfully! We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try. Some Bellydance experience is recommended.
Layering Tribal Fusion Movements with Control and Precision:

This class will begin with posture and technique drills, focusing on executing movements correctly and gaining muscle memory which is crucial in layering. We will continue by layering these movements on top of each other and eventually working towards layering 3 movements at a time. These moves will then be put into combinations and a short choreography will be introduced. All levels are welcome, beginning and advanced variations will be offered.
This class is designed for the dedicated Bellydance student, and is suggested for dancers with several years of experience in Tribal Bellydance or Suhaila Salimpour technique. Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preperation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. Bring a mat, a notebook and pen.
